World Book Day

Opening the school door yesterday morning was a joy as I was greeted by familiar faces dressed as wonderful book characters. In amongst the characters there was the beanstalk, from Jack and the Beanstalk, Hermione from the Harry Potter series, the Cat in the Hat, the Book Fairy and Percy Jackson.

The St. Mary’s team put on a good show and came dressed as crayons from the story ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt. During the morning the children were divided into their house teams and took part in a carousel of storytelling where they were read the four stories that have been shortlisted for the Oxfordshire Book Awards. The books were: ‘How to be a Lion’ by Ed Vere, ‘The King with Dirty Feet’ by Sally Pomme Clayton, ‘Gaspard the Fox’ by Zeb Soanes and ‘Cyril and Pat’ by Emily Gravett.

When the children had heard all the stories they had the opportunity to vote for their favourite one and the result has been submitted to the shortlisting committee. Once schools across the county have voted we will announce the winning story.
